Furry friends all have their own personalities and quirks and can get anxious when realising your home is being packed-up and moved away. I have moved a couple of times with my pups Little and Pez by my side and I have conjured up a couple of tips to help make moving with a dog a little easier. Here are some tips for minimising stress for your pooch before and during your big move – I hope they help!
1. Neighbourhood Selection
Before you pick out your dream home, make sure your pet will love it just as much as you do. Check out whether they have nearby pet-friendly parks
2. Plan a Pre-Move Visit
If possible, take your dog to the new house to explore before you actually move in.
3. Pack Early
By bringing in moving boxes early, and by keeping your furry friends in a familiar room you plan to pack up last.
4. Travel Skills
Many pets haven’t spent much time in crates or cars. In the weeks or months leading up to the big trip, you can prepare your pets by gradually acclimating them to their crates. First, place their food inside an open crate, and eventually have them eat their meals in the crate with the door shut. Try carrying your pets around the house in the crate or taking a short drive. You can help your pets develop a positive association with the crate by providing treats and playtime at the conclusion of crate time.
5. Make a Safe Room
Move your pets out last. On moving day, clear out a room for your pup and set up his bed, water, and toys. Stick a note on the door instructing “Do not open” to avoid runaway accidents.
6. Dog Sitting
Consider taking your pup to a friend’s or family member’s house for the day. Another option is take them to their usual doggy day-care/pet motel.
